Tartan Fabric consists of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors. Although it was invented by an Englishman, it is particularly associated with Celtic countries, especially Scotland. Scottish Kilts almost always have tartan patterns. Tartan fabrics are known as “Tartan Plaid” in North America. In Scotland, this word means a tartan cloth slung over the shoulder or a blanket. At our Online Fabric Store, we carry Tartans, Provincial Tartans and many other fabrics! Our customers can choose by the color or material, whether its cotton, polyester, poly viscose or a blend of materials. Tartan Fabrics are made with alternating bands of pre-dyed color threads woven as both warp and weft at right angles to each other. This forms visible diagonal lines where different colors cross, giving the appearance of new colors blended from the original ones.
